Common differenced = a₂ − a₁.
General termaₙ = a + (n − 1)d.
Sum of n termsSₙ = n2[2a + (n − 1)d] = n2(a + l).
Term from a sumaₙ = Sₙ − Sₙ₋₁, for n ≥ 2; a₁ = S₁.
From the endkth term from the end = l − (k − 1)d.

Here a is the first term, d the common difference, n a term position or number of terms, l the last term and Sₙ the sum of the first n terms. Term positions and term counts must be positive integers.

Which method should I use?
QuestionA useful starting point
A particular term or positionUse aₙ = a + (n − 1)d. If solving for n, check it is a positive integer.
Two terms are givenWrite one equation for each term and subtract to find d.
A sum is requiredUse Sₙ = n[2a + (n − 1)d]/2, or n(a + l)/2 when l is known.
The last few termsIdentify their first and last positions, then add only those terms.
A formula for Sₙ is givenUse a₁ = S₁ and aₙ = Sₙ − Sₙ₋₁ for n ≥ 2.
Multiples in a rangeFind the first and last included multiples, then form the AP.

Follow the method named in the question. These suggestions do not make a method compulsory when none is specified.

Arithmetic Progressions: frequently asked questions

How do I decide whether a sequence is an AP?

Subtract each term from the next. The sequence is an AP if the successive differences are equal. Preserve signs: for 21, 18, 15, the common difference is 18 − 21 = −3. Unequal differences, such as 4 and 9, show that a sequence is not an AP.

Why does the nth-term formula contain n − 1?

Starting from the first term, you add the common difference once to reach the second term, twice to reach the third term, and n − 1 times to reach the nth term. Therefore aₙ = a + (n − 1)d.

How do I check whether a number is a term of an AP?

Set a + (n − 1)d equal to the given number and solve for n. The number occurs only if n is a positive integer. Do not round a fractional n to a nearby whole number.

Can an AP have a negative common difference or a zero sum?

Yes. A negative common difference means the terms decrease. A sum can be zero when positive and negative terms cancel. When solving Sₙ = 0, reject n = 0 if the question asks for a positive number of terms.

How do I find a term counted from the end?

Use the last term as the first term of the reversed AP and change d to −d. Equivalently, the kth term from the end is l − (k − 1)d, where l and d refer to the original AP.

How do I find a term when the sum Sₙ is given?

For n ≥ 2, subtract the sum of the first n − 1 terms from the sum of the first n terms: aₙ = Sₙ − Sₙ₋₁. Find the first term directly from a₁ = S₁. A term and a cumulative sum are different quantities.

How do I add only the last ten terms of an AP?

First locate them. In a 60-term AP, the last ten terms are a₅₁ through a₆₀. Their sum is 10(a₅₁ + a₆₀)/2. You may also subtract S₅₀ from S₆₀; do not use S₁₀, which adds the first ten terms.

Do I solve both OR alternatives in the exam?

Answer one alternative where an OR choice is printed. Both alternatives are solved here for practice. Each alternative carries 2 marks, but the complete OR pair counts as one numbered question on this page.

How do I find the first negative term of an AP?

For a decreasing AP, use aₙ = a + (n − 1)d and solve aₙ < 0. Choose the smallest positive integer satisfying the inequality. For 24, 21, 18, …, 27 − 3n < 0, so n > 9. The first negative term is a₁₀ = −3; a₉ = 0.

How do I find the first term and common difference when two terms are given?

Write the nth-term formula for each given term and subtract the equations. If a₃ = 12 and a₇ = 28, then a + 2d = 12 and a + 6d = 28. Subtracting gives 4d = 16, so d = 4. Substitution gives a = 4.

How do I find the middle term of a finite AP?

First find the number of terms using l = a + (n − 1)d. If n is odd, the middle term is a at position (n + 1)/2. For 6, 13, …, 230, n = 33, so the middle term is a₁₇ = 118. If n is even, there are two middle terms.
